Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to wear or bring?

All you need to wear is loose sports clothing that will allow you to punch and kick. And we advise you to bring a bottle of water. If you are a beginner or just visiting for a few days then the gym has spare hand-wraps, gloves and shin pads for you to use. However, if you are going to be training with us on a regular basis then you will eventually want your own equipment. And if you are going to be sparring, then you will need a gum shield (mouth protector). You can buy everything that you need for training (equipment, clothing etc) in our gym shop at very reasonable prices.

What happens in a Muay Thai class?

Our Muay Thai classes are two hours long. We start with a 15 minute warm-up (skipping, jogging, or whatever you prefer), followed by 10 mins stretching and 10 minutes shadowboxing. The next 80 or so minutes are filled with several rounds each of pad-work, bag-work, sparring and clinching. We also like to mix it up, so 2-3 times per week we change the format to focus more on learning and drilling technique and combinations. Our classes are for all levels - beginner, intermediate, advanced and fighters.

What if I am new to Muay Thai?

Our group classes are for all levels, But if you are a total beginner, then our trainers will take you aside to teach you the basics (such as how to punch, kick, knee and elbow) and get you familiar with other things like pad-work. We all know what it is like to be new at something and we guarantee that you will be well looked after during every class. If the idea of joining a class feels a little intimidating, then another option is to book a private session with a trainer. The benefit is that you get a full hour of their undivided attention, which will speed up your progress and help you gain confidence.

Do I have to spar or clinch?

No. We understand that sparring and clinching can look intimidating if you have never done them before. Neither are compulsory at Chinnarach. We leave it up to each person to decide if they want to give it a go or not. Some people begin not wanting to at first, and then end up changing their minds as they progress.

What is the Muay Thai class schedule?

There are two classes each day. Morning 8am-10am. Afternoon 4pm-6pm. Monday to Saturday (there are no classes on Sunday).

How much does training cost?

We offer a variety of training packages for Muay Thai group classes, private sessions and Body Pump classes. Please refer to our Training & Prices page.

How do I pay for training?

You pay when you get to the gym. No need to pay in advance.

Can you arrange fights for me?

Yes. Absolutely. There is a fight night in Koh Phangan every week in one of the island's four stadiums, so there are plenty of opportunities if you want to fight. But we need to see if you are ready to fight or not. Normally fights are confirmed 2 weeks in advance. If you are new to the fight game, then we will find local opponents of a similar standard. But you are experienced and want to test your skills, then we can guarantee you fights with seasoned fighters from across the region. You can watch all of Koh Phangan's fight nights since they started again in mid-2022 on this YouTube channel.

Can I stay at the gym?

  • Yes. We offer a variety of budget rooms and huts at the gym. These are for students only. The minimum stay is one week. Go to our Accommodation page for details.

  • All accommodation must be booked and confirmed in advance. To confirm your booking, you will need to pay a non-refundable deposit of 2000 baht. This is paid by bank transfer.

Is food included?

No. Food is not included with accommodation. But there are a huge range of food options (including vegan) within walking distance of the gym at roadside stalls, cafes, restaurants and food markets. For local Thai food, you can expect to pay 60-100 baht per meal. For western food, you will pay a bit more. So it’s super cheap to eat here and there are plenty of different choices and variety to suit all tastes.
